Learn From Your Mistakes - Tea Party
Monday, March 2, 2009 at 11:02AM St. Louis had 1,000 - Ft. Worth had about 200 - Ft Myers had about 25, it easily could have been 100. It was a Tea Party.
I attended the local Tea-Party in Ft. Myers Florida.
Organization is the key to any successful campaign, ask President Obama. Unfortunately this aspect was missing in Ft. Myers.
The Tea Party should get people inspired, feel good to be associated (loosly or directly) with a group. It should make people want to get involved and take another step.
People that did not attend should know from the media attention that there are like minded people. It may make it easier for them to participate in the future. They are not alone in the universe.
THERE WERE BIG PROBLEMS IN FT MYERS - You need to learn from these.
Boditch Beach - Where the event was scheduled. There are 60 parking slots here, then you go a mile. I waited 30 minutes, no slots opened up. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION -
Our Tea Party was scheduled for Bowditch Beach. There are two ways on to the Island - ALL RESIDENTS AVOID THIS ISLAND DURING THE TOURIST SEASON. Thank god this was Friday - On the weekend it can take well over an hour to get to to make the last three miles. But if you are a tourist it is worth it, come on down!. Probably half the potential attendees blew it off BEFORE THEY EVEN STARTED.
Parking - After braving the last 30 minutes to go two miles you get to Bowditch Beach I waited about 30 minutes, then we were saved.
SAVED BY THE SHARPIE - We were ready to give up when a man with a bleeding leg (A really bad dog bit) drove up and put up a very small sign, it was at ankle level. Oops the Tea Party was moved to another park.
The new location was just a mile away, nice park, right in the middle of tourist area. I did not even attempt public parking. I paid $7 to park in a private lot, got the last spot, my lucky day.
After waiting 45 minutes, the event started 15 minutes late. Partly due to police and medics having to do with the dog bite.
OUR TEA PARTY - It started off with the local organizer, Mary Rakovitch, she is affiliated with americac2c.org , she started with something like --- "I have never done anything like this so tell me if I am doing anything wrong...".
She talked, she made some good points, she effectively outlined the general issues at hand. Then it was sort of opened up to anyone, without any constraints, it became a free for all.
The first person got up (see photo below), he walked to the central area, he had a funny look about him, It looked like he was thinking..."I can't believe this is happening to me, it is my lucky day, it is my time to shine." He looked around and started to talk about the stimulus plan, it was why we are here...Ooops he supported the stimulus plan, he supported the spending, he supported the socialist programs - maybe he did not get the message. Someone stood-up got in his face and the "I have a bigger one then you do started". That dance lasted a couple of minutes. Then someone who know's something got up and sort of corralled them off stage , OK it was me.
I spoke, other people spoke but it had already gone down-hill.
We later were informed that Mr. It's My Lucky Day sort of likes to get in the press, likes to take the opposite side regardless of his thoughts - which implies he has no thoughts. He really likes to see himself on TV. Furthermore we understand a couple of very local media outlets have basically banned the man...I really don't know, he could have been an Obama or Acorn operative.
Conclusion:
There could have been 100-200 people at this event.
The disturbance could have been avoided.
These events are 25% for the people that attend, and 75% for the TV Audience. The lack of attendance made the movement feel weak. One TV station reported that 10 people attended. One TV station was even going to break into the noon news, live from the Tea Party, but not enough people showed up.
Which brings us to what the TV Audience heard...Unfortunately Mr. Look At My Big One did get on TV and frankly trumped the organizer when he said..."They are using the stimulus package as a point of contention here and they really are conservative Obama haters."
He sounded credible.
