Door to Door - Become the Republican Fuller Brush Man
Friday, April 3, 2009 at 11:28AM About 1975 I was working for TelePrompTer Corporation (Then the largest cable TV company in the world) out of the upper Manhattan office. I was a sales manager and had a team of some 5-10 sales people. We served from about 76th St North. Some ot those areas were young professionals, but it was largly Spanish Harlem, Black Harlem, Ghetto Harlem, Jewish Inwood, Puerto Rican Inwood and some rich neighborhoods on the upper East side. It was the greatest mixture of Europeans, Blacks, Asians, Africans, Blues, Browns, Whites and semi-whites. I never really saw the colors, but I remember the people.
I was this 24 year old Midwest white guy, wearing a cream leisure suit, driving my 1972 Datsun 510 (55 mpg before the feds got involved). I stood out. People thought I was a cop. I knocked on doors selling cable TV sometimes till 10 at night - yes in Harlem. I doubt if Kojack would have followed me. I was too young to know any better. I even partied in Harlem a few times.
Many of these appeared to be hostile areas. In reality I was never threatened, possibly intimated and only had a gun pulled on me one time, true.
What does this have to do with you, your future aspirations of knocking on your precinct and neighborhood doors? All in the prospect of furthering democracy.
So here are a few nuggets I have learned. (I am assuming you have a message you are delivering)
- This is the hardest part...The first thing you need to do is knock on the first door. After that it is all down-hill.
- You will ring the door bell, AND knock. The odds are no-one is home anyway. All that frustration and no-one is home.
- Guess what --- you need to keep records and probably leave information. Optimally you want to press the flesh at EVERY HOME.
- Next door, yes probably no-one is home.
WELL THAT WAS EASY... That is how you knock on doors. We will discuss how to deal with people later...yes I have secrets.
UKnow I Am Right would like you to volunteer 10-20 hours a year, we will take more.
Now you are saying to yourself "This guy really did not teach me much, knock on that first door brillant."
I am not done...
I have found from hundreds, if not thousands of hours personally knocking on doors. Monitoring ten's of thousands of hours of sales people. Door-to-door success is predictable.
I could send 20 sales people into the field, not all well trained, for five hours and at the end of the day have 100 sales. I could train another 20 the next day and 95 sales would come back, do it again it's 105.
What are we selling? Getting our people to vote conservative, independents to vote conservative, fence riders to vote conservative and hopefully, on occasion, get others to change their religion.
I can put you in the field and determine your success before you arrive. But I can't get you to the street and I can't open the door for you.
Your lesson today is that you are a success, I guarantee it.
We need your hours, we need your success.
